Types Of Alopecia

Alopecia is abnormal hair loss, balding or reduced hair density.  There are several different types of Alopecia, depending upon the location on the head, how they evolve on the scalp and their underlying cause.  Some contributing factors such as:
Heredity those with family history of hair loss
Physical health hormonal changes especially thyroid or postpartum shedding can affect hair growth.
Emotional health hair growth cycles can be affected by extreme psychological depression/anxiety, stress, or trauma.
Drugs or chemical ingestion growth cycle can be affected by some medication (I.E. general anesthesia, antidepressants, and steroids just to name a few).

Types of Alopecia

  • Alopecia Totalis- starts with small, round patches or hair loss & progresses until there is total scalp hair loss.

  • Alopecia Universalis- all body hair is lost.

  • Androgenic Alopecia- also known as male-pattern baldness; it can occur in both men and women.

  • Alopecia Areata- people experience the sudden or sometimes unrecognized falling out of hair in patches or spots.

  • Postpartum Alopecia- is temporary hair loss experienced at the end of pregnancy.  So experience sudden & excessive shedding three to nine months is delivery.

  • Traction Alopecia-  is the most common balding disorder among young women & girls with highly textured hair.  Traction baldness occurs when the hair is pulled too tight.  The hair is literally pulled out of the follicle, taking out the hair root and bulb.  If the tight pulling continues over a long period of time, permanent scarring or balding will develop.

There are different types of treatments to help with treating Alopecia.  If you were experiencing any of these sign or systems I would urge you to schedule an appointment with your Dermatologist to help with diagnoses and treatment options.

If you are looking for a non-surgical option, I’m certified in non-surgical hair replacement.  You can purchase nonsurgical hair replacement systems such as full lace wigs, toupees, or choose other hair weaving and hair extensions options.
